Why Road Trips Tell You All You Need To Know About Your Relationship

Dating is fun, especially in the beginning. Everything is new and exciting, and can make you laugh and simultaneously feel like you’re going to throw up, (some people call those butterflies, but whatever.) However, as fun as all those feelings are, they can sometimes cloud your rationality. On the other hand, once those feelings from a baby-relationship are gone, sometimes it’s hard to figure out what exactly your relationship should look like. That’s why we think it’s an excellent idea for you and your lover to take a road trip together.

1

You’ll Find Out How Planning Together Works

Even if the two of you are the most spontaneous couple to ever walk the planet, there are a few things that you have to figure out before you get on the road, like whose car you’re going to take. It’s also a good idea to figure out how you’ll pay for gas, what the driving rotation will look like, and where you plan on staying when you get to your destination(s). Maybe you both are super detail-oriented people who want to figure out every stop and exactly how many miles you need to drive each day. Maybe you both like to fly by the seat of your pants, and figure out the details as you go. Or maybe (and probably most likely) you each fall somewhere between those two extremes. Either way, planning a road trip will help you figure out how the two of you work together as a team.

2

You’ll Be in Close Quarters for Long Periods of Time

No matter how big your car is, it will start to feel pretty tiny after a few hours of driving. When you’re in a car with somebody else for 8+ hours, you’re going to find out just how much you enjoy/can stand that person.

The same is true vice versa. Maybe the way you pop your fingers isn’t that big of a deal on a normal day, but by the sixteenth time you’ve done it while sitting in the car, it might start to get annoying. Learning to be thoughtful of each other can be a huge step in the right direction for your relationship.

3

Experiencing New Things Together is Fun

There are only so many times you can go out to pizza before that routine starts to get a bit dull. Going on a road trip shakes up your normal routine, and there’s nothing boring about that. Even a short road trip, going somewhere you’ve never been together, is going to be far more exciting then going to the movies again this weekend.

4

You’ll Talk About Things You Wouldn’t Normally Talk About

That doesn’t have to be as scary as it sounds. It doesn’t mean the two of you are going to exchange “I love yous,” (but maybe you will, who’s to say?) but you’ll probably talk about things you wouldn’t talk about on a normal date.

That doesn’t mean you should feel inclined to share anything you’re not ready to talk about, but chances are you’re just going to open up more when you have hours on end to talk.

5

…And You’ll Learn When To Shut Up

As the famous quote fromAPulp Fiction goes, “That’s when you know you’ve found somebody really special: you can just shut the f*** up for a minute and comfortably share silence.” In the car, after you’ve burned through all your drive-through calories and Red Bull caffeine, you will eventually get tired of talking. And when that happens, if you can just sit together silently and still enjoy each other’s company, then you can rest easy knowing that you don’t always have to put on a show with that person. And that is a truly beautiful thing.
